Flower Power Reduces Injuries in Exam Rooms

After an employee was hurt, the Honolulu Sub-specialty team set out to eliminate the risk of tripping and falling over rolling chairs in exam rooms. Team members figured out the best location for the chair and marked the spot with a flower-shaped sticker on the floor. They also communicated with Environmental Services staff to ensure workers returned the chairs to the right spot after cleaning exam rooms. Since implementing the change, no staff has been injured and the team has spread its best practice to other facilities.

Here's What Worked

  • Educating providers and staff about the safest place for rolling chairs in exam rooms
  • Collaborating with Environmental Services staff to ensure chairs are returned to the right spot after cleaning exam rooms
  • Sharing the best practice with other teams

What can your team do to use visual cues in ways that might improve safety or improve performance?
