On the Road

On the road at the Institute for Health Care Improvement

We tried surfing

We recently spent time in Orlando at the Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI) conference. The annual conference brings together health care innovation leaders from around the country to share ideas and experiences for four days.

KP’s ground breaking unit-based teams were highlighted at the conference. While we were there, we spent time with co-leads fro the Colorado Region, Leah Brines and Kristie Wverker-Delange, RN. Both were at the IHI conference representing the Asthma Care UBT.

They explained that their team went from a 43% ICS inhaler (corticosteroid inhaler) use for their patients ages 5-17 to a stretch goal of 60% in an eight month period. The inhalers help patients manage their symptoms and cut down on acute asthma attacks and emergency room visits.

They explained that all members of the UBT were very clear on the goal, including physicians. They all worked with HealthConnect to identify the patients and do outreach calls. When patients came in for visits, the team educated them and their families of the importance of using inhalers. This is another great example of a true success story. Way to go Colorado Asthma Unit Based Team! Now, let’s spread this successful practice.

Paul and Dan are intent on helping unit-based teams become the platform for how Kaiser Permanente delivers care. That means focusing on small changes that add up to huge improvements in service, clinical outcomes and cost reductions.
